Barbara C. Harris Scholarship Application
On Ash Wednesday, 2022, Bishop Provenzano announced the launch of the Barbara C. Harris Scholas Program for Truth and Reparation. The Scholars program, named after Bishop Barbara Harris, the first woman to be consecrated a Bishop in the Anglican Communion, is a Diocesan initiative being coordinated by the Reparations Committee. The Scholarships also honor Bishop Harris for her work as a civil rights activist, teacher, leader, and visionary.
Through this scholarship program, the Bishop and Reparations Committee hope to promote equity in education by offering academic or vocational scholarships to descendants of enslaved people. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be (1) African American/Black or Caribbean American; (2) a US citizen or hold permanent resident status; (3) reside in the Diocese of Long Island; and (4) starting, or continuing to pursue, post-secondary undergraduate education at an accredited college or university, or advanced vocational/occupational school or trade union program.
Successful scholarship recipients will receive an award of up to $5,000 dollars towards their academic or occupational training. The scholarship will be awarded through the recipient’s college or other educational institution. More information, including the application, can be found here.
The deadline for applications is March 31, 2023.
