African-American Cemetery Winter Clean-Up | St. John's Episcopal Church

Join us at the African-American Cemetery opposite the rectory for a winter clean-up of this historic burial site. The fall has been unkind to the site, as has some illegal dumping. This is our chance to attend to the site, especially in commemoration of Black History Month which is celebrated in February in the United States.

Gloves are encouraged. No sign-up needed. Parking is available at the Rectory (290 Harbor Road, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724).

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.

Like our lives, our church community is a gift from God we neither earn nor deserve, and yet, it is ours. We are responsible for caring for it, for nourishing it, and for participating in the ever outpouring gift of God's grace which we share through our actions together. We are stewards of these gifts for as long as we live, and we steward the gift of this church so that future generations will have the opportunity to receive God’s grace and put it into action.

Our whole life and ministry is “Grace in Action.”
