Buzzing about Candlemas! | St. John's Episcopal Church

Thanks to the families who came out last Friday on a VERY cold night to celebrate Candlemas. We made candles using beeswax, constructed hives and got psyched about starting our beekeeping program in the spring! You can see more photos HERE.

Candlemas is the day when Jesus was presented at the temple 40 days after his birth. On that day we met Simeon and Anna who had waited their whole lives for that light to come into the world. We celebrated that and celebrated how light is coming back into our world. If you'd like to have a candle blessed, come talk to us.

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.

Like our lives, our church community is a gift from God we neither earn nor deserve, and yet, it is ours. We are responsible for caring for it, for nourishing it, and for participating in the ever outpouring gift of God's grace which we share through our actions together. We are stewards of these gifts for as long as we live, and we steward the gift of this church so that future generations will have the opportunity to receive God’s grace and put it into action.

Our whole life and ministry is “Grace in Action.”
