Cemetery Update: Progress
Hopefully, many of you saw the Blog post about our work at the historic African-American Cemetery off of Harbor Road (Harbor Road Cemetery). But there has been an important update.
Mid-week last week as the Nor'easter was beginning to bear down on the region, I had the chance to track down one of the descendants of a person buried in the cemetery who had been looking for the site for some years. Denise and I had the chance to tour the site with Robert Hughes, Town Historian and Kevin Thorbourne, the Director of Minority Affairs for the Town of Huntington.
All of us were moved. We stopped in the midst of our work and offered prayers for the continuation of the effort and a widening of the circle of friendship and care of the cemetery.
Ms. Shepherd is still connected to families whose loved ones are buried on site and will be an invaluable resource and partner in our future efforts.
It is just a reminder to me that in this work, and in so much other work, when God invites us into his mission of healing and reconciling, we should expect great things.
Thanks be to God,
Gideon
