Deep Thoughts: “Being Christian” Reading Group

Join the Rector this Epiphany season to explore some of the meanings of being a Christian. Many of us have been practicing Christians our whole lives but only infrequently stop to explore what it means to be a Christian. The former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams explores just this in his little book “Being Christian.”

Our final session on February 7 will refect on the last chapter: Prayer. Please try to complete that chapter before we meet. If you are unable to finish it in advance, you are, of course, still welcome.

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.

Like our lives, our church community is a gift from God we neither earn nor deserve, and yet, it is ours. We are responsible for caring for it, for nourishing it, and for participating in the ever outpouring gift of God's grace which we share through our actions together. We are stewards of these gifts for as long as we live, and we steward the gift of this church so that future generations will have the opportunity to receive God’s grace and put it into action.

Our whole life and ministry is “Grace in Action.”
