Don't Be Afraid | St. John's Episcopal Church

Last February St. John’s hosted a beautiful music and spirituality weekend featuring singer-songwriter and worship leader Ana Hernandez. One of the beautiful songs that Ana taught us that weekend was her song “Don't be Afraid.”

All week long this hauntingly comforting song has been in my head along with the memory that God’s most consistent announcement in scripture is the same: “Don’t be afraid.”

As we journey together through difficult times - times of incredible grief, loss and uncertainty - I am comforted and draw strength strength from trusting that God walks our way with us and invites us to trust that the future belongs to God and is filled with hope and possibility.

Friends, don’t be afraid. Together we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.

Like our lives, our church community is a gift from God we neither earn nor deserve, and yet, it is ours. We are responsible for caring for it, for nourishing it, and for participating in the ever outpouring gift of God's grace which we share through our actions together. We are stewards of these gifts for as long as we live, and we steward the gift of this church so that future generations will have the opportunity to receive God’s grace and put it into action.

Our whole life and ministry is “Grace in Action.”
