Choral Evensong for All Saints
5 pm, Sunday, November 5, 2023
St. John’s, Cold Spring Harbor
On Sunday, November 5, 2023, St. John’s Clergy and Choir will offer a special eve ning service of Evensong, or Sung Evening Prayer.
Evensong, as a practice, comes to the Episcopal Church from the cathedral and college choral tratdition of the English church where it is offered in some places daily and in others on a regular schedule. It is the sung office of Evening Prayer, the counterpoint to our practice of Morning Prayer. It includes sung canticles, the Song of Mary or Magnificat, and the song of Simeon, or Nunc Dimmittis; sung suffrages or prayers, and sung collects. There are, of course, hymns and spoken prayers and readings that round out the service material.
Many people will travel great distances across England to pray the evening office with choirs, and we offer this special offering to our community to mark the feast of All Saints.
The service is brief, contains no sermon or homily, is beautifully contemplative, and will be preceded by a banner organ recital by Matthew Koraus, the Director of Music at St. Patrick’s Church in Huntington at 4:15 pm. It is a perfect opportunity to gather at the end of the day to thank God for all the blessings of the day that is past and in expectation of the blessings of the day that is to come.
