Choral Evensong for Good Shepherd Sunday

St. John’s, Cold Spring Harbor

On Sunday, April 21, 2024, St. John’s Clergy and Choir will offer a special evening service of Evensong, or Sung Evening Prayer. Please join us for a short service (about 45 minutes) which features choral music, scripture readings, and prayers. The brief service, which contains no sermon or homily, is a contemplative way to end the week.

Traditionally the special music featured in Evensong includes psalm settings, canticles - in particular the Magnificat or Song of Mary and Nunc Dimittis or song of Simeon, as well as special anthems. This special music all interwoven with scriptures from the Old and New Testaments, the Apostles' Creed, Lord's Prayer, and other prayers and hymns.

This service is a special offering to our community to mark Eastertide, and in particular Good Shepherd Sunday.

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.

Like our lives, our church community is a gift from God we neither earn nor deserve, and yet, it is ours. We are responsible for caring for it, for nourishing it, and for participating in the ever outpouring gift of God's grace which we share through our actions together. We are stewards of these gifts for as long as we live, and we steward the gift of this church so that future generations will have the opportunity to receive God’s grace and put it into action.

Our whole life and ministry is “Grace in Action.”
