Gesualdo Six & Theotokos Ensemble
Reflecting on a Transformational Concert + Our Next Performance
I am thrilled to share highlights from Tuesday night’s mesmerizing performance by The Gesualdo Six, which left our Concerts by the Pond audience in awe. Their exquisite voices filled St. John's, creating an atmosphere of profound peace and reflection, a serene contrast to the election-day buzz outside. The program of English Renaissance motets was not only a journey through some of the most beautiful choral music ever composed but a collective experience of calm and clarity that truly resonated with everyone in attendance.
This week, we were also honored to host a “Behind the Music” workshop on Monday night, where The Gesualdo Six shared insights into their interpretation, vocal techniques, and historical context for their repertoire. It was an extraordinary opportunity to dive deeper into the art of Renaissance choral music, and we thank all who joined us for this enriching evening. These moments of connection and learning are invaluable to building a vibrant musical community, and we’re grateful to everyone who attended.
None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our audience, volunteers, and dedicated concert committee members, whose hard work and enthusiasm make each concert a success. Thank you all for fostering a welcoming atmosphere and bringing this concert series to life!
Now, we invite you to our next event in the Concerts by the Pond series:
THEOTOKOS ENSEMBLE: A Musical Devotion to Mary
Sunday, November 24 • 4:00 pm • $30 (Adults) / $15 (Students)
Theotokos Ensemble, the living embodiment of a Baroque church ensemble, will present A Musical Devotion to Mary, led by viola da gamba player Doug Balliett, soprano Rocky Duval, and the entire ensemble. This unique program features Marian Masterpieces that honor the Virgin Mary, tracing her life through the eyes of Renaissance composers.
In the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, devotion to Mary—the Virgin mother of Jesus Christ—permeated all arts: painting, sculpture, liturgy, poetry, and of course, music. Each event in Mary’s life sparked creative expressions from Renaissance artists, and this concert will explore how composers approached her with reverence, tenderness, and even a perspective from Mary herself. The centerpiece of the evening is Merula’s hypnotic Lament, which imagines Mary, clairvoyant, singing to her infant son.
This promises to be a truly moving performance, capturing the beauty and devotion inspired by Mary. Secure your tickets and join us for another unforgettable evening of music at St. John’s Church.
