Lay Preaching Initiative
Dear Friends,
One of the hallmarks of my previous ministry at the Episcopal High School was supporting young people and adults in preparing reflective homilies - stories about God’s activities in their life. These short homilies became a regular part of our worship together as a community and bound the community together ever more closely.
In addition to Youth Sunday ,I know that there has been an on-again-off-again tradition of something similar here at St. John’s, sometimes centered on clergy vacations. I can see the utility of that, but I haven’t embraced this pattern simply because I want to be present to experience these occasions with the whole congregation.
This year, I want to invite any interested parishioners of any age to consider if there is a word of hope, a word of comfort a word of challenge, or a passage os scripture that God has placed in your heart that you feel drawn to share with the community. Interested parishioners will be given the support of the clergy as they prepare their reflections and prepare to offer them. Ideally, we would hear from our fellow parishioners regularly throughout the year.
If you feel called to this kind of lay preaching ministry, please reach out and let me know.
Yours,
Gideon
