The ministry of reading in church, or Lay Reading, is a gift of the protestant reformation to the churches. It has been a principle in our church’s history since then that the Bible should be read in the language spoken by the congregation and by members of the congregation. Prior to the 16th century, the readings in church would have been read by the clergy and read in Latin.
At St. John’s, we invite all our parishioners who want to read in the church to sign up to be Lay Readers. This ministry is open to anyone who has been confirmed and who is interested. We offer a training session annually to support our Lay Readers to feel comfortable and confident in their ministry. To sign up, please either email Gideon or sign up at the Holy Smokes Barbecue!
