Long Island-CAN & Metro-IAF Action in Brooklyn
Long Island Congregations Associations and Neighborhoods (LI-CAN) participated in an action at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn this past Sunday with the Governor of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo.
Governor Cuomo was invited to Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church to deliver publicly on a promise he had made to leaders of the coalition of New York City Church leaders in our sibling organizations there to release tax credits to build over 1,000 affordable senior homes in Central Brooklyn. LI-CAN was on the agenda to advance its ongoing work to drive a transition in the state of New York's treatment infrastructure to the clinical best practice, medically assisted treatment.
The event was packed with over 1,000 participants drawn from congregations across the city and Long Island. the organizations represented included Manhattan Together, East Brooklyn Congregations, Empowered Queens United in Action and Leadership (EQUAL), South Bronx Churches (SBC) and our own LI-CAN, including 12 parishioners from our own congregation.
It was an exciting and moving day and it helped advance the causes of affordable senior housing in New York City, and our own work to make Long Island safer and healthier.
