Meditation for Optimal Living - last session before Christmas
Wednesday, Dec 12, 7:15 - 8:30 pm
Bleecker Hall, St. John's Church
Come and join the class as the group does guided 20-minute relaxation meditations in which Irene leads the class in relaxing the body, followed by a period of silence in which each person continues the relaxing process. Afterwards there is discussion of the experience by the participants, as well as new information about how to further their progress. There is then a guided fifteen minute breathing technique meditation that is similar to Yoga breathing exercises. Both are recommended to be practiced during the week at home; CDs or MP3 recordings are available as guides for the meditations.
By learning the techniques at the class and practicing them once a day at home, you will soon be able to recall the relaxed state in times of stress in your life, whether you are waiting impatiently in traffic, preparing to give a talk at work or whatever pressure you might be dealing with. Recalling the relaxed feeling will give you a sense of calm and being in control of your responses in helpful and reliable ways.
Practicing a relaxation meditation each day will increase your energy and your ability to call on the creative aspects of yourself. It will strengthen your immune system and increase your resistance to illness and disease. The book, The Relaxation Response, by Dr. Herbert Benson, gives detailed information about the profound benefits physically, mentally and spiritually of making a relaxation meditation a regular part of your life.
