Special Organ Recital: The Life and Music of Alfred Hollins
Join us at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, January 19, at 3:00 pm for a unique and inspiring organ recital hosted by the Nassau Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. This special event will feature a lecture-recital celebrating the life and music of British organist Alfred Hollins.
Born blind, Hollins overcame extraordinary challenges to become one of the most celebrated musicians of the 19th and 20th centuries. Renowned for his virtuosity and ingenuity, Hollins performed across the English-speaking world, captivating audiences that included presidents, royalty, and the musical greats of his era. Alongside his performance career, Hollins composed a remarkable collection of music for both church and concert use, distinguished by its craftsmanship and innovation.
Attendees will have the rare opportunity to hear several of Hollins’ compositions, some of which have not been performed publicly in decades. Leading the program is Ruaraidh Sutherland, organist at St. John’s of Lattingtown Episcopal Church in Locust Valley. A graduate of Edinburgh University and a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists in London, Ruaraidh brings extensive experience, having held prominent positions in both the UK and the US.
Joining Ruaraidh is Josef Hunter, a junior at North Shore High School, who will provide vocal performances during the program. In addition to showcasing the organ, the recital will feature selections on the piano, offering a dynamic and engaging exploration of Hollins’ work.
This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the rich history and beauty of Alfred Hollins’ music while enjoying the talents of exceptional local musicians. We warmly invite the congregation and community to attend this special event. Admission is free, and all are welcome!
