Oyster Dive!
Good news from our partners in the Shellfish Gardening program!
Last week a team of folks performed the first monitoring dive of the "spawner sanctuary" established last year by the Town of Oyster Bay just off the Laurel Hollow Beach. You can see a video of the dive here.
The spawner sanctuary is a permanent bed of oysters, seeded last fall with oysters grown over the summer in the floating oyster garden. More than 80,000 oysters measuring 5-10 cm were placed in the bed. We are delighted to report that 90% of those oysters survived and there are now healthy beds in places that were previously empty. This will help in our campaign to improve the water quality in Cold Spring Harbor!
