On Pentecost We Wear Red | St. John's Episcopal Church

On Pentecost, we decorate the church with special red streamers and a large dove to remind us of the dramatic coming down of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost to the disciples!

We will hear the Gospel in several languages, remembering the miracle that allowed everyone to hear in their own language.

If weather permits, we will release three doves from the pond edge to symbolize the liberating and inspiring power of God that was given to the church on the day of Pentecost 2000 years ago.

Finally, on this day, we invite all our parishioners to wear red to church as a fun way to participate in this dramatic day!

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.

Like our lives, our church community is a gift from God we neither earn nor deserve, and yet, it is ours. We are responsible for caring for it, for nourishing it, and for participating in the ever outpouring gift of God's grace which we share through our actions together. We are stewards of these gifts for as long as we live, and we steward the gift of this church so that future generations will have the opportunity to receive God’s grace and put it into action.

Our whole life and ministry is “Grace in Action.”
