Project Upholding Humanity Update
St. John’s Outreach Committee has been pleased to be a partner in the work of “Project Upholding Humanity” (PUH) since its inception.
PUH is an interfaith partnership between communities of faith on Long Island to respond to the serial refugee crises of the last few years. Initially conceived by Dr. Isma Chaudhury, President Emerita of the Islamic Center in Westbury, Long Island, and Rabbi Michael White, senior Rabbi at Temple Sinai in Roslyn, the project has grown to include many churches, synagogues, and mosques on the Island. It has also been the recipient of several grants from the United Jewish Appeal to expand its capacity and provide staff support to the project.
To date, the project has:
- Completely resettled 10 families from Afghanistan
- Assisted in the resettlement of 20 other refugees from Afghanistan
- Resettled two refugee families from Ukraine
- Resettled two families from South America
St. John’s Church is proud to be a part of this amazing and transformative work in our community.
Dr. Choudhury will be our guest in our Lenten Series on March 8.
