St. John’s Celebrates May Day with Gifts of Food to Neighbors
St. John’s love flowed through the community on May 1st, when we distributed care packages donated by parishioners to 80 families in Huntington Station. Kirsten Heinemann and Chris Brown kindly offered their garage to store the 140+ bags of food collected in our recent Outreach food drive. The Red Cross provided 2 vans and several volunteers to pick up the food and help us make our deliveries. Ellen Hatch and Laura Swiggett accompanied Pilar Moya (ED, Housing Help), Amanda Ramos (Youth Director, St. Hugh’s of Lincoln), Willie Perez (Hombres de Palabra) and the Red Cross volunteers to deliver the care packages. Families also received hot pizza, grocery gift cards, masks, and community resource lists compiled by Housing Help, which provide essential information such as food pantry locations/hours and Covid-19 mobile testing sites. “Through community teamwork, our most deserving neighbors received direct help. Even with masked faces, their appreciation was clearly evident,” said Ellen. The remaining 60 care packages will be distributed this week in either Huntington Station or Wyandanch. We continue to assess needs on a week-to-week basis, and will keep parishioners informed as our Outreach efforts evolve. We are very grateful for the support of the St. John’s congregation, as are our neighbors.
Thank you!
