The Chalice Returns
St. John’s received word this past week from the Diocese of Long Island that churches are permitted, at long last, to return to receiving communion in both kinds: the bread, and the wine. Beginning on Maundy Thursday, April 14, 2022, St. John’s will offer the chalice to communicants again after our pandemic pause. This is among the last of the significant pandemic restrictions left to lift.
According to the doctrine of concomitance, the church believes that Christ is fully and equally present in both the bread and the wine; therefore, no one must receive the sacrament in both kinds, but all may receive both kinds on and after Maundy Thursday.
Intinction, the practice of dipping the bread into the wine, is still discontinued at this time.
