Upholding Humanity Project
Since September of 2021St. John’s Outreach Committee has been working closely with local interfaith partners under the leadership of Dr. Isma Choudhury (Islamic Center, Woodbury) and Rabbi Michael White (Temple Sinai, Roslyn) to support Afghan Refugees. Isma and Michael have named this project the “Upholding Humanity” project
The project seeks to support resettling up to 10 Afhgham refugee families (up to 100 individuals) on Long Island and the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.
As one might imagine this is a complex and complicated project with institutional partners like ours learning to work together and with the government contracted resettlement agencies in a challenging time. We hope to help the first families resettle before the holy month of Ramadan which begins April 2, 2022.
There will be many opportunities for St. John’s parishioners to support these families as they are identified. Those opportunities will be communicated in the At St. John’s in coming weeks.
In the meantime, in the name of the church and with thanks to the generosity of our parishioners the Outreach Committee has been able to commit $10,000 to the “Upholding Humanity” project, without sacrificing our ongoing support to our other Outreach partners.
