Welcome Doug Mohrmann!
I am very excited to announce today that St. John’s has called the Rev. Dr. Douglas Mohrmann to be out next Curate!
Doug and I got to know each other when we traveled together to Codrington Theological College in Barbados this past February as part of a delegation from the Diocese of Long Island. Doug impressed me then with his openness, thoughtfulness and gentleness of spirit. I was thrilled when Bishop Provenzano approached me with his wonderful idea of placing Doug at St. John’s as the final part of Doug’s ministry preparation.
Doug joins us with extensive experience. He has been serving as a Seminarian at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City where he was also ordained to the transitional Diaconate. Prior to his ordination Doug had a career as a professor at several institutions. He was Visiting Scholar at Union Theological Seminary, and he has served as professor of biblical studies at The General Theological Seminary and Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, MI). At Cornerstone, he served as Chair of the Religion and Ministry Division and was Co-Director of the Honors Program.
There he also founded the Center for the Study of Antiquity and led several trips to Greece and Israel. In 2023 his commentary on the Greek version of Deuteronomy was published by Brill Publishing. He has also published articles in the Anglican Theological Review (2021, 2019). His current writing project is on spirituality in the time of Jesus.
Douglas’s formal education began at Evangel University (Springfield, MO) in Mathematics and Bible. His seminary work was at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (S. Hamilton, MA) with an emphasis on New Testament and Biblical Languages. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Durham (England) under the supervision of James D. G. Dunn.
Douglas and his wife, Rebecca, currently live in West Hempstead, NY, while their home parish is Church of the Ascension in Brooklyn. They are proud to be parents of Jessica, Barbara, Joshua, Alyssa, John, and Timothy - all adults. Love of the outdoors is motivation for their backpacking and hiking in remote areas of Michigan, Minnesota, and Maine. Gardening, riding bikes, and walking their golden retriever, Winston, are other favored pastimes.
Doug will join our team on September 1, 2024. He will be ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Provenzano on September 14. Doug and Rebecca look forward to moving into the Taylor House in mid-september. Obviously with his varied skills we will be redistributing some of the traditional curacy roles around, but those details will be forthcoming as more decisions are made.
Faithfully yours,
Gideon
